Sexual Assault in Media: Queer Folks & The #metoo Movement

Sexual Assault has just recently come to the forefront of media since the start of the (second) #metoo movement. This has only been in the last few years where recognition and awareness around sexual assault and sexual violence are becoming more widely discussed and taken seriously. As we all know, sexual assault has been a major issue for hundreds of years; however, as a patriarchal society, we are slow to become consciously aware of issues enough for there to be a significant impact in our society. Given that femxle cisgender identified folks are leading this movement, the LGBTQ community has yet to be included in the discussion in the way that feels inclusive not just for womxn, but for all oppressed minorities, encompassing all intersections.

LGBTQ folks are not represented at all in the media when it comes to sexual assault. This is in part because although sexual assault itself is represented in the media, it is mainly from the standpoint of victim blaming as opposed to a more feminist and humane approach to the issue. Therefore, even though as a society we are still progressing in some aspects, we still have a long road to go and many more battles to fight in order for the conversation and representation to become as inclusive and queer as possible.
